Hairstyle – Fishtail Braid

Hello my lovelies,

A hairstyle look which I absolutely love is a fishtail braid. As you know I’m not one to do much with my hair but I am slowly trying to attempt different things to jazz up my hair. I am not creative in the slightest and I do not have much patience but perseverance is key! I’m learning what I can and can’t do with my hair and surprisingly I can do a lot even though it is so soft and fine. Normally all I do is just put my hair up but when I have the time it is nice to do something a little different.

I love these sorts of hairstyles as I love showing off my ombre hair and I think something like this looks lovely. As you can see it is nowhere near perfection but I am getting there and it is nice to show you my ideas of what you can achieve, even being a novice like me. My hair is coming out all over the place, but I quite like a more messier look rather than it being completely slick and perfect. I mean who is perfect anyway!? Certainly not me!

I would suggest looking at YouTube videos first and practicing on others as this one is a little time consuming. Nothing is worse than finishing the braid and it looking awful so having to start from scratch! This is me quite a lot of the time though.

I first washed my hair which was a bit of a bad move but I didn’t want to do this with second day hair as at the front it is quite relaxed so I wanted to have nice shiny clean hair! Unfortunately due to the length and type of my hair it gets extremely knotty so I used a detangling spray. Any one will do I am currently using one from The Body Shop as it is great for coloured hair. I used my trusty Tangle Teezer to brush through my hair which is an absolute dream, I can’t brush my hair with anything else! I then used some dry shampoo to give it a little volume and texture as my hair lacks both sadly.

I don’t like using too many products in my hair as it starts to make it look quite heavy so this is perfect for me. I then started to braid away and trust me it wasn’t easy but I got there in the end! I didn’t use any hairspray for this look and I like that it is a little messy in places. If I was to wear this on a night out or knowing I was out all day at an event, then I would add it but just for day-to-day  or a shopping trip I’m happy with not using any. Obviously it is your choice and you may want to add some, I’m not telling you what you have to use – just what works for me.

Let me know whether you have attempted this, or hairstyles you enjoy as I am all up for trying new things!

P.s. thank you to my lovely sister Emily for taking the pictures of my hair for  me!

  1. Thanks for compiling these tips and your advice/experience into one post – I NEVER do anything with my hair, part of it is fear of damage and part of it is laziness, but you’ve really inspired me to give braiding and plaiting a go 🙂 xx

  2. I’ve only ever had a fishtail braid once, and that was when my friend did it. I have the hair long enough for it, I just can’t get my head around how to do it! Same with French braids – I’m totally hopeless. Love this post those, Batiste is a life saver!

    1. Aww thank you, it took me a while to be honest to get it how I wanted it. I’m forever changing how much blonde I want in my hair. There are so many ways of doing this though. Hopefully you find something that works xxx

  3. This looks so good and really neat too! I used to wear mine like this quite a lot when I had extensions in but sadly my hair’s too short now. It always used to make my hands ache doing it too lol.
